Secondary Syphilis During Pregnancy: Importance of Prenatal Control

Abstract

 

Introduction. Secondary syphilis is a widely studied entity in different populations worldwide and our country will not escape this reality. However, it is palpable lack of knowledge in the management of the same in the pregnant patient, it is high underreporting that occurs in our country product of lack prenatal care by the patient or physician.

Case. Primigravida, 13 years old with 23 weeks pregnancy, she went to her first prenatal appointment with 3 month history of maculopapular lesions in all four limbs, palmar region, back and chest  and condylomatous lesions in perianal and vulvar region. Given the clinical, non-treponemal test was conducted which reported 1:32 titers. Subsequently, the MHATP test, to confirm the diagnosis gives a positive result. Obstetrical ultrasound was performed in which no findings suggestive evidence of fetal infection. Benzathine penicillin G is administered 7.2 million IU intramuscularly in three divided doses of 2.4 million IU weekly, obtaining the serologic titers decreased.

Conclusion. The maternal screening during prenatal care and recognition of this disease are key in the early treatment of pregnant woman and avoid fetal complications during pregnancy. Similarly, leads to a reduction in the registration of the same and thus achieve health policies that benefit pregnant women in general.
