Treatment of acute variceal hemorrhage in patient with liver cirrhosis

Abstract
Upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to esophageal varices rupture is the main complication in patients with portal hypertension and the most frequent cause of death in patients with liver cirrhosis. Treatment of the patient with acute bleeding from esophageal varices is divided into pharmacological and endoscopic measures.
Among the endoscopic management, there is ligation of esophageal varices with elastic bands, being the treatment of choice with good results and lower complication rates compared to other methods, such as sclerotherapy.
